Wagner Chief has Strong Support in Russia – Poll

The survey was conducted from June 22 to 28 as Prigozhin led his Wagner fighters to briefly occupy the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

Wagner Group head Yevgeny Prigozhin had to abort the mutiny against Russian president Vladimir Putin, seeking exile in Belarus under a deal with the leader. But his support among the Russian public has not fallen down, as per a poll published by Russia’s Levada Center.

The survey was conducted from June 22 to 28 as Prigozhin led his Wagner fighters to briefly occupy the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don. While Vladimir Putin described Prigozhin’s mutiny attempt as “treason”, the threat raised speculation that the Russian leader’s position is weaker than what may appear.

Among the Russian public, a significant minority still supports the Wagner chief, it was revealed as Prigozhin had the approval of 58 per cent of the 1,643 respondents two days before the uprising, Levada reported. The polling body said those surveyed saw Prigozhin as a “patriot” and a “victorious general” owing to his fighters’ success in Ukraine.

Support for Prigozhin dropped to 31 percent during the mutiny and after it was aborted it remained at 29 percent, Levada reported. If Prigozhin was to run for president of Russia, 9 per cent respondents said that they were willing to vote for him- half of 18 per cent earlier.

While Russian president’s approval rose to 82 per cent from 81 per cent before the rebellion. Sixty-seven percent respondents told Levada in May that they believed Russia was moving in the right direction. But this figure fell to 53 per cent during the Wagner mutiny.

YouTube is Restricting Some Users from Using Ad Blockers

0
YouTube

The tech industry is going through a tough phase, and YouTube is not immune to it. The online video sharing platform is currently facing a decline in ad revenues, and as a result, it is implementing significant changes to its platform. These changes include increasing the number of ads on videos and focusing on attracting more users to its paid Premium subscription. However, that’s not all. The company is now also reportedly cracking down on users who utilize ad-blockers to remove ads and are not paying for paid subscription.

YouTube

Recently, a Reddit user brought attention to the fact that Google owned YouTube, is implementing restrictions on users who use ad blockers by limiting their video views. The post included a screenshot showing a pop-up notification sent by YouTube to users who have enabled ad blockers.

The notification issued by YouTube warns users that if they do not disable their ad blocker, the platform will restrict their video viewing, limiting it to only three videos. The notification states, “Video player will be blocked after 3 videos – It looks like you may be using an ad blocker. Video playback will be blocked unless YouTube is allowed or the ad blocker is disabled.”

The notification also emphasises the importance of ads for YouTube to remain free for its billions of users worldwide. It suggests that users can enjoy an ad-free experience by subscribing to YouTube Premium, while still enabling creators to earn revenue from their subscriptions. “Ads allow YouTube to stay free for billions of users worldwide. You can go ad-free with YouTube Premium, and creators can still get paid from your subscription,” the message further reads.

Notably, once users receive this warning, they will be left with two options on YouTube: either disable their ad blocker and allow ads to be displayed, or subscribe to YouTube Premium to eliminate all advertisements.

YouTube has also officially confirmed this crackdown and stated that these notifications are part of an experiment. The company encourages viewers to either enable ads on the platform or consider trying out YouTube Premium as alternatives. “We’re running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium,” YouTube said in an statement received by BleepingComputer.
YouTube has further clarified that if users fail to comply with the notification and continue to ignore the request to disable their ad blockers, the platform may temporarily block playback in “extreme cases.” The company however, assures that this measure will only be implemented if viewers persistently ignore repeated requests to enable ads on YouTube.

“In extreme cases, where viewers continue their use of ad blockers, playback will be temporarily disabled. We take disabling playback very seriously, and will only disable playback if viewers ignore repeated requests to allow ads on YouTube,” the company further told the publication.

To prevent any such inconvenience, YouTube says that users can continue watching the videos on platform by keeping ads or can block ads by subscribing to the YouTube Premium.

Notably, YouTube has not yet confirmed how many countries are involved in this experiment and who is seeing these warnings. However, the recent crackdown follows YouTube’s previous “small experiment” that began in May, during which the company started directly blocking ad blocker users from accessing the platform.

Notably, despite a decline in revenue, YouTube is experiencing a rapid surge in its Music and Premium subscriptions. A report by Variety reveals that the platform has more than 80 million paying subscribers combined (as of end of 2022), which is a significant increase of 30 million from the 50 million the company announced in September 2021.

Twitter was hit by a global outage that is preventing thousands of users from accessing the social media platform. Many users complained of seeing the “Cannot retrieve tweets” error message when they try to view or post tweets.  Some users also reported seeing a “Rate limit exceeded error message.”

Addressing the outage, Twitter CEO Elon Musk said that they have “applied temporary limits” on their users.

However, Twitter has not yet provided any explanation for the cause of the problem. We will update this report as soon as we hear from them, so keep checking back for more information.

According to Down Detector, a website that tracks online service disruptions, over 4,000 reports of issues with Twitter have been logged so far.

Following the momentary outage, thousands of users took to the micro-blogging site to share their experiences. Some shared memes that showed Twitter chief Elon Musk busy working towards restoring the platform. Many of the tweets were hilarious posts that ranged from comical memes on the outage featuring popular K-pop stars and comedians.

The outage which was reported, however, was not witnessed by many users across the globe. We at indianexpress.com faced the outage, however, colleagues stationed at nearby locations informed us that the platform was working fine. This outage seems to be limited to a certain geographical area.

This is the third time that the platform is facing an outage. On March 6, it was reported that Twitter experienced a ‘bevvy’ of glitches as links stopped working, some users were unable to log in and images were not loading for others. Similarly, on February 8, it was reported that many Twitter users found themselves unable to tweet, follow accounts or access their direct messages as the Elon Musk-owned platform experienced a slew of technical problems.

West Indies Can be No.1 Team in World Cricket: Gambhir

0
West Indies

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir backed West Indies to become the No.1 team in the world cricket after the two-time champions failed to qualify for the 2023 World Cup.

West Indies

West Indies suffered a major setback as they failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 48 years. They were knocked out of the qualifiers after losing to Scotland. In the Super 6 match on July 1, West Indies went from 81/6 to being all out for 181. Scotland comfortably chased down the target, keeping their slim hopes of qualifying alive.

WI, once a formidable team, now face a tragic situation. They had a golden era under the leadership of Clive Lloyd, winning the World Cup in 1975 and 1979. However, Gambhir expressed his admiration for West Indies, saying: “I love West Indies. I love West Indian cricket. I still believe they can be the No.1 team in world cricket!”

Scotland celebrated a historic victory over West Indies, thanks to an outstanding performance by Brandon McMullen, boosting their chances of qualifying for the World Cup. McMullen showcased his talent with both bat and ball, claiming three wickets for 32 runs and contributing a crucial 69 runs during Scotland’s chase.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Scotland’s decision paid off as McMullen quickly dismissed Johnson Charles and Shamarh Brooks for ducks, while Chris Sole removed Kyle Mayers. West Indies struggled at 30 for four, but a 77-run partnership between Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd provided some hope. However, their dismissals, including a remarkable catch by Safyaan Sharif, triggered a collapse. Scotland’s bowlers, including Sole and Chris Greaves, secured two wickets each, bowling out West Indies for 181.

In pursuit of victory, Scotland lost an early wicket but McMullen and Matthew Cross took charge, displaying excellent strike rotation and punishing loose deliveries. McMullen reached his half-century, followed shortly by Cross, who found momentum with three consecutive boundaries. Despite losing McMullen and George Munsey, Captain Richie Berrington joined Cross to guide Scotland to a historic triumph. Cross sealed the deal with a powerful pull through deep mid-wicket, securing victory with 6.3 overs to spare.

Baldness | Scientists discovered a possible treatment

Scientists are looking at molecules in mole hair as a potential treatment for baldness. Laura Herrera/Stocksy
  • Researchers say molecules found in mole hair may be a key to developing a new Botox-like treatment for baldness.
  • They say the new treatment, if it proves successful, could be a major advancement in the field.
  • Experts agree but note that the treatment has only been used in mouse models and may not be effective on human hair.

Researchers say the type of hair that could cure baldness comes from the unlikeliest of places.

Remember that oddly determined single hair growing wildly from that random mole on your body?

That’s the one.

A team of researchers says there’s a type of molecule that causes skin moles to overproduce hair. That, they say, offers a possible treatment for age-related hair loss.

All that’s required is to reshuffle the molecules a bit.

“It is a huge deal. This is an issue that impacts millions of men and women, and there are currently only treatments – no solutions,” Maksim Plikus, a lead study author and a professor of developmental and cell biology at the University of California Irvine, told Medical News Today.

“What we’ve discovered can potentially have a disruptive effect,” he added. “At present, the field is ripe for innovation, for a new compound that acts on hair follicle stem cells, re-awakening them for new hair growth.”

Details from the baldness study

In the study, published in the journal Nature, Plikus and his team report that osteopontin, a molecule that hadn’t previously been linked to hair growth, is unusually active in hairy mole skin in mouse models.

The team also found that, like in a previous mouse model, samples of human hairy skin moles increased levels of osteopontin when compared to adjacent normal skin.

The researchers’ theory states osteopontin could be injected into a balding person’s scalp to reactivate dormant hair follicles to cure baldness in a Botox-like procedure.

“Researchers drew inspiration from mother nature’s own experiment – millions of people have small and large moles that grow long hair,” Plikus said. “Molecules that are increased in such human skin moles might hold an answer for hair stem cell stimulation.”

“Osteopontin is particularly enriched in hairy skin moles and then micro-injected into skin it potently triggers hair stem cells and activates new hair growth. Thus, we identified new hair growth inducing protein,” he added.

Understanding the hair molecule osteopontin

Dr. Michele Green, a cosmetic dermatologist in New York who was not involved in the study, told Medical News Today that osteopontin is a signaling molecule produced by senescent pigment cells called melanocytes, which is an unlikely source of cell regeneration.

“Although senescent cells are often associated with aging, tissue death, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and cardiovascular disease, they can also regulate or trigger tissue growth and contribute to wound healing,” Green said.

“As a result of specific signals, immature stem cells can either remain dormant or become active to regenerate into specific cells or tissue,” she added. “These specific signals that trigger stem cells can be manipulated to tell the stem cells to do specific things. In this case, researchers looked into altering these signals to push the stem cells in hair follicles into a hyperactive state, causing excess hair growth.”

The potential impact of new hair growth treatment

Dr. Ryan Welter, the chief executive officer of Regeneris Medical and the founder of New England Hair Restoration, told Medical News Today that using senescent cells for hair regrowth “is particularly interesting given the senescent cells are generally considered detrimental as a part of the natural aging of organisms.”

“It seems that the unique secretome of aged melanocytes stimulate the hair follicle stem cell niche, thus stimulating hair growth into anagen. Melanocytes from mole hair will be of interest after this study,” said Welter, who was not involved in the study.

He cautioned that years of advancement in mouse studies hasn’t always translated to humans. “so we are still likely a long way off from any cure unfortunately.”

Some Potential limitations

Pilkus added the new hair wouldn’t grow as wildly as mole hair because the features of the original hair follicles being stimulated remain intact.

“Hair loss is underlined by a decrease in essential signaling proteins inside of hair follicles that normally stimulate hair stem cells,” Plikus said. “Consequently, for common forms of hair loss, hair stem cells remain dormant for very long stretches of time, despite being intact. All of this makes it a challenging problem to solve.”

It’s generally accepted that, to date, there are only two popular hair loss brand names that actually work to differing degrees: Rogaine and Propecia. Neither works perfectly and aren’t right for everyone.

Pilkus is the co-founder and chief scientific officer of Amplifica, a California-based biotech company that will start human trials on the potential new hair treatment in the coming weeks.

“A compound that can achieve such an effect and that does not need to be given very often can transform the market that is currently dominated by costly and invasive hair transplantation surgery and daily medicines,” Pilkus said.

Conversion through Online Gaming Platforms | UP CM

LUCKNOW Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said that cultural warriors should make people aware of the attacks (conversion) on our culture in the digital age but must not take the law into their hands as it would be help such elements get away. Participating in the ‘Save Culture Save India Mission’, which was organised by “Save Culture Save India Foundation” at Gautam Buddha Nagar University on Sunday, he said, “On receiving any such information, inform the Cultural Warrior Police immediately.”

The CM said that the digital age is as beneficial as it is dangerous. “Recently, an incident had come to light, in which school children were being lured to convert their religion through online gaming. The gang was busted by our police. Similarly, another conversion gang, which was engaged in converting deaf and dumb children was exposed a few days ago. The incidents of religious conversion are not happening only in Uttar Pradesh. Such people target decent families as part of a conspiracy. The recent incidents in Delhi and Mumbai serve as an example. Our government has brought an ordinance to stop this and the law is working accordingly,” he added according to the statement issued by his office after the event.

CM Yogi further said that all the countries of the world have their own unique identities. For example, France’s identity is art whereas Britain is known for its business interests. Similarly, the identity of India is its culture. Sanskrit and culture are the identity of India and no one is allowed to play with this. You can’t serve anything in society in the name of freedom of expression. It also has some rules and regulations”, he added.

The CM also said that the Mughals ruled this country comfortably until they attacked temples. “Their decline started as they started destroying temple… Today, the descendants of Aurangzeb are pulling rickshaws in Kolkata,” he said. Emphasising that there have been good and bad people in every period, Yogi said that it is important that good people become part of the campaign to save culture and make people aware.

Cultural warriors honoured

On the occasion, CM Yogi launched the website of the ‘Save Culture Save India Mission’ and honoured cultural warriors. They were presented a cheque of ₹1 lakh and a citation by the Foundation. The awardees included — Abhay Shah, who runs the Swachh Cyber India movement, Manish Prania, creative branding and maker of the much talked about film ‘Ek Ladki’, Vaishali Shah, senior writer and CEO of Pixel, filmmaker Praveen Chaturvedi, Hindu Janajagaran Samiti spokesperson Ramesh Shinde, journalist Swati Goyal Sharma, TV anchor Pradeep Bhandari, Sanjeev Newar, who runs the Gems of Bollywood movement and Supreme Court advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain. CM Yogi also presented the shawl and citation to the Foundation’s Business and revenue advisor Uttam Dave as well as industrialist Umesh Chhajje and senior advocate Amit Singh who are associated with the foundation.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Central Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar, Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Industrial Development Jaswant Singh Saini, Minister of State for Public Works Brijesh Singh and university teachers and students also attended the programme.
