Expert Views
“The lack of global support had restrained the Indian indices from pursuing their record highs earlier, despite the presence of a resilient domestic macroeconomic background. With positive surprises assisting buoyancy in the global market and the advance of the southwest monsoon, the domestic market succeeded in marching to new highs with renewed strength,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

“Global investor sentiments were uplifted by a favourable revision in Q1 GDP, a fall in jobless claims, and the positive outcome of the Fed’s US bank stress test,” Nair added.

Aditya Gaggar Director of Progressive Shares, said, “On the weekly time frame, Nifty50 has given the much-awaited range breakout with above-the-stomach candlestick pattern coupled with a Rounding Bottom pattern breakout. As per the pattern, the approximate target comes to around 20,800.”

Global Markets
Global shares were steady on Friday as investors scrutinised inflation data from both sides of the Atlantic to cap a rollercoaster quarter for markets that upended bets on interest rates peaking.

Stocks in Asia inched higher as weak factory activity data from China stoked expectations of fresh stimulus. China’s blue-chip CSI300 Index and the Shanghai Composite Index rose about 0.5%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was flat. Japan’s Nikkei ended slightly lower but surged 27% in the first half, driven by a boom in chip-related companies and inflows into trading houses.

In Europe, the STOXX index of 600 companies was 0.6% ahead, and ahead 7.5% so far this year.

Oil prices rise
Oil prices rose to nearly $75 a barrel on Friday but were on course for a fourth consecutive quarter of losses amid concerns over sluggish global economic activity and fuel demand.

Benchmark Brent crude futures for September delivery rose 11 cents or 0.15% to stand at $74.62. US West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) rose 8 cents or 0.09% to $70.51. The contract is down 7% on a quarterly basis, its second consecutive quarterly drop.

Rupee strengthens
The Indian rupee was little changed on Friday, but ended June with its highest gains since January, on the back of strong foreign fund inflows into equity markets.

The rupee ended at 82.0375 per dollar, compared to its close of 82.0550 in the previous session. In the month, the rupee rose 0.77%, highest since a 1.19% appreciation in January.

360 million XRP bought by whales ahead of major price move
According to a recent tweet by crypto analyst Ali Martinez, XRP whales have been spotted buying the dip as they added 360 million XRP to their bags after the token’s price dropped by 12% from June 22 to June 28. The worth of XRP purchased by whales is estimated at $170 million. On June 22, XRP jumped to $0.52, but this turned out to be a trap for long positions as the XRP price reversed subsequently. The token then plunged below the $0.486 level, representing the daily MA 50. On June 28, the moment came for XRP dip buyers as the price dipped to lows of $0.464. Before continuing further upward, XRP must confirm the daily MA 50 barrier at $0.486 as support. In this situation, XRP might retest highs near $0.52.

$4 trillion giant Fidelity refiles for spot Bitcoin ETF
As recently reported by Eric Balchunas, senior ETF analyst for Bloomberg, Fidelity has officially refiled for a spot Bitcoin ETF under the “Wise Origin Bitcoin Trust” name. This move is the most recent evidence of how traditional finance is embracing cryptocurrencies. Balchunas notes that the filing looks similar to those of investment titans BlackRock and Ark Invest. The Surveillance Sharing Agreement (SSA) wording resembles the SSA language in ARK’s filings and also appears to be present in BlackRock’s submission. This suggests a coalescing of strategies by these large institutional players around a set template that may be more likely to win approval from the SEC.

France Protests: Authorities Struggle to quell riots

0
France Protest

Widespread riots rocked France for the fourth consecutive day on Friday after a 17-year-old was shot dead by the police in a Paris suburb on Tuesday.

With pressure from rightwing parties mounting on President Emmanuel Macron to declare a state of emergency, 45,000 police officers were deployed on the streets on Saturday, The Guardian reported

The fatal shooting of a teenager named Nahel of Algerian and Moroccan descent by a police officer during a traffic stop enraged the people who then took to streets, set buildings and vehicles on fire. The purported video of the shooting reignited the debate around racism and police violence in the country.

Nahel to be buried on Saturday

Nahel is due to be buried in a ceremony on Saturday, The Guardian reported. Nahel’s family lawyers urged the media to refrain from reporting the ceremony, saying it was “a day of reflection” for Nahel’s relatives.

More than 1,000 people arrested so far

Meanwhile, 270 people were arrested on Friday night, bringing the total to more than 1,100 since unrest ignited early on Saturday, Reuters quoted Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin as saying. Of them, 80 were arrested on Friday from the southern city of Marseille, France’s second-largest and home to many people of North African descent.

Darmanin added that more than 200 police officers have been injured since the unrest erupted.

Macron’s urges social media platforms to remove ‘sensitive’ footage

Amid the unrest, President Macron left a European Union summit in Brussels to attend a cabinet crisis meeting. However, he urged social media platforms to remove “the most sensitive” footage of violence and to reveal the identities of users promoting violence.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin met Meta, Twitter, Snapchat and TikTok officials over this.

CNN report said Macron declared a ban on all “large-scale events” in France, including “celebratory events and numerous gatherings”. Parents were urged to keep their children at home.

‘Violence resolves nothing’: Mbappe appeals for peace

International soccer icon Kylian Mbappe urged for an end to the violence. The France soccer team player was quoted as saying by AP, “Many of us are from working-class neighborhoods, we too share this feeling of pain and sadness.”

“Violence resolves nothing. … There are other peaceful and constructive ways to express yourself,” MBappe wrote on Twitter, adding that it is the time for “mourning, dialogue and reconstruction” instead.

UN urges France to address issues of racism, discrimination

The United Nations called on French authorities to “address the deep issues of racism and discrimination in law enforcement”. In a statement on Friday, UN spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani expressed concerns over Nahel’s death.

Shamdasani noted that an investigation has been launched into the alleged voluntary homicide.

“We also emphasize the importance of peaceful assembly. We call on the authorities to ensure use of force by police to address violent elements in demonstrations always respects the principles of legality, necessity, proportionality, non-discrimination, precaution and accountability,” the statement said.

Shamdasani also called for swift investigation into any allegations of disproportionate use of force by people exercising their rights to protest.

France rejects UN remarks

However, dismissing the UN’s remarks, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “France, and its police forces, fight with determination against racism and all forms of discrimination. There can be no doubt about this commitment.” “The use of force by the national police and gendarmerie is governed by the principles of absolute necessity and proportionality, strictly framed and controlled,” the ministry added.

(He) saw an Arab face…wanted to take his life’: Nahel’s mother

Meanwhile, the cop accused of the killing is in preventive custody under formal investigation for voluntary homicide. Nahel’s mother Mounia told a French TV channel that she does not blame the entire police force, but only the officer who took her son’s life. The cop “saw an Arab face, a little kid, and wanted to take his life”, she said.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Nahel had died on the scene due to gunshot injuries. A purported video of the incident showed two police personnel standing by the side of the stationary car, with one pointing a pistol at the driver. “You are going to get a bullet in the head,” a voice could be heard saying. The police officer then appears to pull the trigger aiming at the driver even as the car attempts to speed away.

The conflict has now rekindled memories of three weeks of nationwide riots in 2005 which led erstwhile President Jacques Chirac to declare a state of emergency after the deaths of two young men electrocuted in a power substation as they hid from police.

The Centre on Friday announced a ‘Tomato Grand Challenge’ (TGC) hackathon, just days after hiking the price of tomatoes in the country.

The Centre on Friday announced a ‘Tomato Grand Challenge’ (TGC) hackathon, just days after hiking the price of tomatoes in the country. According to a government release, the government announced the initiative to invite innovative ideas at various levels of the tomato value chain to ensure availability of tomato to the consumers at affordable prices and help tomato farmers get value for the produce.

Tomato

Growers said with traders not showing interest in buying tomatoes, they were being forced to sell the produce to Delhi, Dehradun, Saharanpur, Chandigarh, Haridwar and other cities of nearby states at their own cost.

Here are five points on the Centre’s TGC hackathon:

  1. The hackathon has been formulated by the department of consumer affairs in collaboration with the ministry of education (innovation cell) and was announced by the secretary of department of consumer affairs Rohit Kumar Singh.
  2. The challenge invites several ideas on comprehensive and focused area interventions in tomato value chain – from cropping and market insights for the farmers, appropriate cultivars (OP varieties or hybrids) with higher shelf-life of the fruits for fresh marker, cultivars specifically suitable for processing, value-addition through interventions that can increase shelf-life, improve transportation of fresh and processing products, innovative packaging and storage, the official release said.
  3. The hackathon invites entry of participants under two tracks – students, research scholars and faculty members, and industry individuals, Indian start-ups, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Limited Liability Partnership (LLPs), and professionals.
  4. The government said that all the winning ideas will be evaluated by experts followed by “prototype development and field implementation for ensuring its usability and scalability on a large scale and price of the product.”
  5. The eligible participants can apply for the hackathon on the official government portal: https://doca.gov.in/gtc/index.php

Tomato price hike

On June 27, the tomato prices across the country hit ₹100 kg per mark in prominent cities due to several factors like shortage of supply, heatwaves, monsoon deficit and even heavy rainfall destroying crops. According to the database of Price Monitoring Division under the Department of Consumer Affairs, the per kilo tomato price on an average rose from ₹25 to ₹41 in the retail markets. Meanwhile, the maximum prices of tomatoes in retail markets were in the range between ₹80 to ₹113.

Meanwhile, according to government officials, the prices are expected to cool down in the next 15 days with increase in supplies from producing centers and reach a normal level within a month.

Heavy Rains

Heavy rains lashed several parts of Gujarat in the last 24 hours, inundating low-lying areas in cities and villages and creating a flood-like situation, an official said on Saturday.

Heavy Rain

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed in Kutch, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Navsari, which were some of the worst-affected districts, the official said.

According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), nine people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the last two days.

As per the data shared by the SEOC, 37 talukas of the state received more than 100 mm rainfall in 30 hours ending at 12 pm on Friday.

Jamnagar taluka of Jamnagar district (269 mm), Kaprada in Valsad (247 mm), Anjar in Kutch (239 mm) and Khergam in Navsari (222 mm) were some of the worst-hit areas, the SEOC stated

According to officials, areas in many districts in Saurashtra-Kutch and south Gujarat regions received extremely heavy rainfall, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas and leaving villages submerged.

Several areas in Ahmedabad city too were waterlogged, which led to heavy traffic jams and inconvenienced commuters.

Gandhidham railway station in Kutch was inundated as the district received very heavy rain, while several villages and towns were flooded in Junagadh, Jamnagar, Kutch, Valsad, Navsari, Mehsana and Surat, officials said.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held an emergency meeting with officials at the SEOC in Gandhinagar on Friday night and directed them to focus on rescue and relief works, including evacuating people living in low-lying areas.

Patel spoke to collectors of Junagadh and Kutch districts, who briefed him about the rain situation, including waterlogging in villages in Visavadar taluka, and evacuation of people along with other relief measures, a government release stated.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted that the intensity of rainfall will reduce in the state on Saturday and the situation will begin to normalise by Sunday.

The department, however, warned of heavy rains at isolated places in the districts of north and south Gujarat and Saurashtra till Sunday morning.

The IMD also said light to moderate rainfall will be witnessed in several parts of the state till Wednesday morning.
