A video of a Bengaluru auto driver breaking down due to his meagre earnings has gone viral on social media. The one-minute clip was posted on Twitter by a user named Zavier as he claimed that the auto driver’s wages had been affected due to free bus rides provided by the Karnataka government.

In the clip, the auto driver is seen speaking in Kannada to a local reporter. During his conversation, the auto driver was in tears as he said that he earned only Rs 40 despite driving for long hours. He blamed the free bus service for women by the Karnataka government for his low earnings.

“A Bengaluru auto driver in tears after collecting just Rs 40/- from 8 am to 1 pm. This is the result of free bus rides given by the new Cong govt in Karnataka. Pushing people into poverty,” read the caption.

The post has been viewed over 125k times and received several reactions. However, social media users were divided over the post and that triggered a debate. While some were sympathetic towards the auto driver, others said that drivers often refused to cooperate with passengers in Bengaluru.

UCC – Opposition Should Refrain from Politics: Mukhtar Naqvi

0
UCC

UCC has been one of the three key poll planks of the BJP for a long time with the other being the abrogation of Article 370.

UCC

Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Saturday targeted the Congress and other opposition parties over the Uniform Civil Code issue and asked them to “listen to their conscience” and refrain from communal politics.

“This is the right time to implement this inclusive reform. It’s now or never for this law,” he told reporters here and asserted that a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will ensure “equality and justice for all”.

UCC refers to a common set of laws that are applicable to all the citizens of India and is not based on religion in dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption among other personal matters.

The mood of the nation is to make Uniform Civil Code free from the “clutches of communal conspirators” who held this hostage for the last seven decades for their narrow-minded self-interests, Naqvi alleged.

Slamming the opposition parties, the BJP leader said, “Listening to conscience is the only befitting reply to communal politics over a progressive law like the Uniform Civil Code which will ensure equality and justice for all.”

‘The Opposition parties should listen to their conscience to control the Congress’ communal confusion and contradiction on UCC,” he added.

Naqvi alleged the Congress’ “mistake of the moment” in 1985 became “punishment for decades” for the country when the party “misused” its numerical strength in Parliament for “communal assault on inclusive reform” in the Shah Bano case. “Unfortunately, instead of rectifying, the Congress is repeating its mistakes,” he charged.

“Even Congress workers, people’s representatives and members of other Opposition parties disagree and are agitated over the party’s policy of confusion, commotion and cozenage on UCC,” Naqvi claimed. The debate over a Uniform Civil Code was reignited after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong push for it, asking how can the country function with dual laws that govern personal matters, and accused the Opposition of using the UCC issue to “mislead and provoke” the Muslim community.

UCC has been one of the three key poll planks of the BJP for a long time with the other being the abrogation of Article 370 which had given special status to Jammu and Kashmir and the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. A parliamentary standing committee has called representatives of the law commission and the law ministry on July 3 on a recent notice issued by the law panel seeking views of stakeholders on the issue of a uniform civil code.

According to the schedule of the standing committee on law and personnel, it will hear the views of representatives of the law panel and legal affairs and legislative departments of the law ministry “on public notice issued by the Law Commission of India on 14th June 2023, inviting views from the various stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code, under the subject ‘Review of Personal Laws'”.

CPI (M) has become a Muslim Party: Kerala BJP chief

0
CPI-M

Amid the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) row, BJP Kerala president K Surendran on Friday slammed Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and his party CPI (M) for his stand on UCC.

CPI-M

Surendran claimed that CPI(M) has become a Muslim party as it opposed UCC.

“CPI(M) has become a Muslim party. The latest example of this is Pinarayi Vijayan’s stand against the uniform civil code,” he said.

He further alleged that the goal of the Chief Minister of Kerala is to polarise Muslims.

“Pinarayi Vijayan’s goal is the polarisation of Muslims. No Muslim parent will accept a triple talaq. Likewise, no Muslim parent will accept discrimination against girls in property rights,” said Kerala BJP state president.

K Surendran further said that “Prime Minister Narendra Modi supports the uniform civil code for social equality.”

Earlier, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Friday that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is on the “electoral agenda” of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Triggering debates around the Uniform Civil Code is an electoral ploy by the Sangh Parivar to press their majoritarian agenda for deepening the communal divide. Let’s oppose any attempts to undermine India’s pluralism and support reforms through democratic discussions within communities,” Kerala’s CM tweeted.

Earlier on June 27, batting for the UCC, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the country cannot be run with “two laws” when the Constitution of India talks about equality for all. He asked how different rules could apply to different family members.

“Will a family function if there are two different sets of rules for people? Then how will a country run? Our Constitution too guarantees equal rights to all people,” PM Modi said.

Stock Market Golds to Bonds | How 5 Asset Classes Performed

Stock Market

Stock Market: The bulls have been in charge on Dalal Street in the truncated week gone by as the domestic equities witnessed a sharp rally fuelled by across-the-board up move with all the four frontline indices – Sensex, Nifty, Nifty Bank and Nifty Midcap – posting record close.

Stock Market

The BSE’s Sensex jumped 803.14 points, or 1.26%, to close at a record level of 64,718.56, while the NSE’s Nifty rallied 216.95 points, or 1.14%, to end at 19,189.05.

With this, the Indian stock market posted its biggest quarterly gains in nearly two years with the Nifty surging 10% in April-June period.

The market rally was led by a blend of domestic as well as global factors that were supportive of the bulls. Resilient local macroeconomic background, sustained inflow of foreign capital, better corporate performance and hopes of an end in interest rate hikes lifted Indian equity markets to record high levels.

“With positive surprises assisting buoyancy in the global stock market and the advance of the southwest monsoon, the domestic stock market succeeded in marching to new highs with renewed strength. Global investor sentiments were uplifted by a favourable revision in Q1 GDP, a fall in jobless claims, and the positive outcome of the Fed’s US bank stress test,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

The foreign portfolio investors (FPI) have pumped in more than ₹61,600 crore into Indian equities during January-June period of 2023.

On the back of this rally, the market capitalisation of all BSE-listed companies jumped by more than 13.47 lakh crore in H1CY23 to ₹296.67 lakh crore.

Going ahead, analysts expect the stock market rally may continue in the second half of the year and the Nifty may hit levels of around 21,000 by December-end.

“The second half of CY2023 is also expected to be good for Indian capital markets, subject to the flow of monsoon. Better monsoon and government schemes will help drive rural demand which will be positive for FMCG, consumer durables and nondurables and construction sectors,” said Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Group Chairman, Inditrade Capital.

Bandyopadhyay expects the financial services sector will also continue to perform well on the back of strong credit growth, improving asset quality and upbeat economic growth.

Moreover, he believes the risk on mode of FIIs to remain intact and many emerging market funds moving out of China will be positive for Indian markets. While volatility may persist in the short-term, Nifty and Sensex may continue to scale new highs.

“We may see Sensex around the level of 70,000 and Nifty around 21,000 by the end of December 2023,” Bandyopadhyay said.

Here’s how different asset classes performed in H1CY23.

Equity Market
The benchmark Nifty has rallied nearly 6%, while Sensex has jumped 6.37% YTD. The Nifty Bank index has surged 4.10%.

Broader indices, Nifty Midcap 100 soared 13.47% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 11.36% during the first six months of 2023, significantly outperforming the frontliners.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty Realty and Nifty Auto gained the most over 20% each, followed by Nifty FMCG rallying more than 18%.

Here’s a look at how different sectors have performed:

Sectoral Index           YTD Performance
Nifty Realty                     20.45%
Nifty Auto                       20.11%
Nifty FMCG                     18.16%
Nifty Healthcare              11.69%
Nifty Pharma                    9.29%
Nifty Financial Services      5.67%
Nifty Private Bank             4.85%
Nifty IT                            3.29%
Nifty Energy –                   4.54%
Nifty PSU Bank                 4.82%
Nifty Metal                       7.65%
Nifty Media                     12.46%

Gold
Gold prices in India have risen by around ₹3,000 per 10 grams, witnessing a gain of 5.3% so far this year. The global economic and political uncertainties like the Russia-Ukraine war, inflation and policy tightening by major central banks have played a significant role in keeping the yellow metal prices volatile in the first half of CY2023.

“Gold prices rallied on the back of geopolitical uncertainties and expectations of an end in interest rate hike cycle by different central banks. The sentiment for yellow metal remains bullish,” said Ajay Kedia, Director, Kedia Advisory.

According to Kedia, the recent weakness in the yellow metal was due to the hawkish comments from the US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Moreover, the technical correction in gold was overdue because of the rally witnessed since October last year, he said.

Going ahead, Kedia believes gold prices to remain volatile but gain bullish momentum amid sustaining geopolitical risks, weakness in Indian rupee and uncertainties as we near upcoming general elections in India.

“MCX gold may rise towards ₹65,000 per 10 grams level by this year-end. The support for gold is seen at ₹56,500 level, Kedia said.

Meanwhile, silver prices have fallen nearly 1% YTD, from the levels near ₹70,800 earlier to tad below ₹70,000 now.

“The outlook is bearish in Silver owing to subdued industrial demand from China. Moreover, the recession in the European Union may push demand lower. The US is expected to increase rates two times at least in the H2 of the year. Hence the dollar index is also expected to stay elevated,” said Jigar Trivedi, Senior Analyst – Currency & Commodity, Reliance Securities.

Fixed Deposits
The interest rate hike cycle by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may have cheered the investors of fixed deposits. The central bank has raised interest rates cumulatively by 250 basis points since May 2022. However, it has hit a pause button in April and June policies.

With this, the interest rates offered by commercial banks on FDs have risen. Comparatively, the public sector banks have lagged behind the smaller private banks, small finance banks and foreign banks. The average interest rate being offered by the top 10 banks is anywhere around 7.6% for FDs with a tenure of three years.

Currency
The Indian rupee appreciated by around 1% against the US dollar this year, making place among select emerging market currencies that gained against the greenback. Prompt intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), improving domestic economic scenario and lower crude oil prices have supported the local currency.

“Since the beginning of this year, the Indian rupee has appreciated by nearly 1% and is amongst the few Emerging Market currencies to have strengthened against the dollar. However, RBI’s regular intervention on both sides, kept the local currency oscillated within 80.85-83.00 levels. Rest of the year’s performance will be dependent on the state of DXY amid hawkish Federal Reserve, then factors like geo-political environment would also provide some headwind, but improving Current Account Deficit dynamics will keep any depreciation under check,” said an economist with a private bank.

She expects the trading range for the rupee to be 80-50.84.00 going ahead.

Bond Yields
The yields on the benchmark 10 year bond have dropped by 20 bps since the beginning of this year. The bond yields have traded in the range of 6.90-7.50% during the first six months of CY2023.

While bond yields were at 7.32% at the end of December 2022, they declined to the levels of 7.10% as on June 30, 2023.

Purola Mahapanchayat: Petitioner moves HC as SC refuse

Purola

Purola: After the Supreme Court asked the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) to approach the Uttarakhand High Court with their petition to prevent a proposed ‘mahapanchayat’ on June 15 by right-wing Hindu organisations in Purola of Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, the petitioner on Wednesday approached the Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court, who will now hear the case on Thursday.

On the other hand, Purola Sub-Divisional Magistrate Devanand Sharma imposed prohibitory orders in the town banning the assembly of four or more people under Section 144  till June 19.

Love JihadThe posters, which threatened “love jihadis” with dire consequences if they did not vacate their shops. (Express photo)

The right-wing groups, mainly the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal, had given a call to organise a ‘mahapanchayat’ against what they termed as incidents of “love jihad”.

Minority groups and NGOs have complained that event targets members of a particular community and will pave the way for further deterioration of peace in the state.

Communal tension has been brewing in Purola and some other towns of Uttarkashi district after two men, one of them Muslim, allegedly tried to abduct a Hindu girl on May 26.

Appearing for the APCR, Advocate Sharukh Alam submitted before the SC bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahnasuddin Amanullah that it is a matter of extreme urgency. Justice Nath said it is an administrative issue and told the petitioner, “You approach the HC”.

Justice Amanullah asked the petitioner why it was distrusting the HC. He said that if there is a mandamus issued by the SC, the HC will take note and pass orders. “You should have some trust in the HC,” the judge said.

As the counsel referred to the statements being made, Justice Amanullah repeated that the petitioner should approach the HC or the district administration. Alam then sought written liberty to do so, but the court was initially reluctant. Later on, it allowed the petitioner’s request to permit it to approach authorities.

“We have approached the Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court; he will hear the matter tomorrow. He would have heard it today (Wednesday) but our filing is not complete,” said Alam, adding, “We have written to the chief secretary, the DGP and the district magistrate.”

PM Modi to Speak on Diaspora’s Role in India’s Growth Story

PM Modi 1

PM Modi will speak on the role of the diaspora in India’s development during his address to Indian Americans here next week, according to a community leader in charge of hosting the event.

PM Modi 1

PM Narendra Modi is visiting the US from June 21-24 at the invitation of US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. They will host Modi at a state dinner on June 22. The visit also includes an address to the Joint Session of the Congress on June 22.

Chicago-based Dr Bharat Barai, who was at the Ronald Reagan Building venue in Washington DC on Wednesday to give final shape to the next week’s event, said that it is a sold-out event, with registration completed for all 838 seats.

“As far as the registrations are concerned, they are closed for the host committee as well as other people. We had an extraordinary response, all by word of mouth because we had only 838 seats. So there was no time and there was no capacity if we advertised outside,” Barai told PTI.

“We used the database that we had from the previous public meetings of PM Modi, and even before we could contact the people, they contacted us and it’s all filled up,” he said.

Modi will address an invitation-only gathering of diaspora leaders from across the country at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington on June 23.

“The topic is going to be the role of the diaspora in the growth story of India. We want to see what we can do as a diaspora to help India and the people of India come up to the new place in the world,” Barai said.

Noting that the event will have very few cultural elements, he said the organisers want to make it primarily an engagement between the diaspora and the prime minister.

“The diaspora is very much excited about having such a visionary and working person who has propelled India to the fifth largest economy in the world. Not only that, he has elevated India’s reputation,” he said.

Amitabh Mittal from Chicago thanked US President Joe Biden for inviting Modi on an official state visit.

“He is the man of the action. He has transformed India. India has been waiting for someone like him to come and take charge,” Mittal said.
Mittal hoped the prime minister would make an announcement on the Hindu Heritage Month in October.

“We have received his letter twice already in the last two years. But since he’s here on the ground, I would love for him to mention that October is celebrated as the Hindu Heritage Month.

“Not only in America, but Canada, Australia, New Zealand and six other countries have joined in, and we have 30 proclamations already,” Mittal said.

Not allowing Hindu students to wear a tilak or tie a kalava; making Urdu a compulsory subject; singing poet-philosopher Mohammad Iqbal’s Lab pe aati hai dua – these are some of the allegations in the FIR against the administration of Ganga Jamuna Senior Secondary School in MP Damoh district.

According to MP police, the FIR is based on the statement of three students.

MP

On June 7, the police filed a case against 11 members of the school management committee. (Express photo)

Late last month, a poster celebrating the school’s success in class 10 Board exams was put up outside the premises, featuring some non-Muslim students in headscarves. This set off protests by right-wing groups, who raised allegations of religious conversion, even as the school insisted the headscarf was part of its uniform. The issue snowballed as the Home Minister sought a probe and MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan too criticised the school.

On Wednesday, Special Judge Rajni Prakash Botam dismissed the bail applications of the three arrested accused – Afsha Sheikh, the school principal; Anas Atahar, a mathematics teacher; and Rustam Ali, the security guard.

The defence lawyer, Anunay Shrivastav, told the court that complainants’ statements in the police FIR “did not feel like it was written by a child, rather it was dictated by adults to implicate the accused”.

The defence lawyers also told the court that there are several hundred Hindu students at the school, but none of them or their parents levelled allegations of religious conversion until the issue was politicised.

The main complainant in the case has claimed that from class 6 onward, “we are given a dupatta, salwar, hijab in a class of 56 girls comprising students from Hindu, Muslim and Jain religions”.

“It is compulsory to wear the hijab with our uniform. If we don’t wear it, our teachers scold us. We don’t wear the hijab and leave our home, but used to wear it when we reached the school gates,” the FIR reads.

The complainant alleged that Urdu was taught since class 1 without giving any other option and making the subject compulsory.

“In the morning, we sing the Muslim prayer, Lab pe aati hai dua, and the national anthem. It is forbidden to wear a tika, kalava; the teachers scold us… The school administration makes us do things against our religion by threatening us. My religious sentiments have been hurt, I am mentally disturbed because of this,” the complaint alleged.

The school administration denied the allegations. Said a senior committee member, “Urdu is a third subject and since this is a minority school, it is taught. Nobody forces the students to not wear their tilak or kalava. The students have been part of our school since they were in nursery. Why are these allegations being made ahead of elections?”

On Tuesday, a bulldozer had arrived near the now-derecognised school as the process began to demolish the first floor, which the local civic body deemed unauthorised.

The municipal authorities Wednesday decided to not use the bulldozer following protests by school children. CMO B L Singh told The Indian Express, “People gathered outside the school because of the bulldozer and this created huge law and order problems. The bulldozer could also not enter the premises properly, so we decided against it. We are manually removing the illegal encroachments. It will take several days.”

On June 7, MP police had filed a case against 11 members of the school management committee under IPC sections 295 (damaging or defiling any object held as sacred by any class of persons), 506 (criminal intimidation), 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), as well as provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021.
